Be Alert! Scam Targeting people with Fake Police Calls on Skype/Telegram
Cybercriminals are constantly devising new ways to steal money from unsuspecting people. Be aware of a recent scam where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials to trick victims into parting with their hard-earned cash.
Here’s how the scam works:
- You receive a call from an unknown number. The caller claims to be an officer from a specific police station or government agency.
- They create a sense of urgency by accusing you of being involved in a serious crime, such as receiving a suspicious package or money laundering.
- To build trust, they might suggest a video call through a messaging app (such as Skype,Telegram) and show you a fake image or document related to the case.
- They pressure you to take immediate action, often suggesting you transfer money to clear your name or avoid arrest.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Don’t be afraid to question authority figures. Real law enforcement would never pressure you for money or personal information over the phone.
- Never download unknown apps or engage in video calls with people claiming to be officials.
- If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact the official agency directly through verified phone numbers or websites.
- Report any such calls to the authorities.
Remember:
- Notice of Appearance: If a caller demands your presence, request a “notice of appearance.” As per legal procedures, authorities can issue a formal notice for your involvement, not demand it over a phone call.
- Safeguarding Women: Legitimate interrogations involving women always occur in the presence of a female officer. If you’re a woman receiving a video call, and there’s no female officer present, disconnect immediately if there is no women present.
- Legitimate law enforcement agencies wouldn’t contact you through unsolicited calls or messaging apps.
- Don’t give in to threats or intimidation. Scammers rely on fear and confusion to manipulate victims.
- Take your time, verify information, and discuss any concerns with a trusted friend or family member before taking any action.
By staying informed and vigilant, you can protect yourself from falling victim to these cunning scams.
